十九世紀、太地に訪ねた人は鯨舟が「何れも皆龍虎華形を彩色し五色爛然たり」と書きました。

現在残るのは上に写真のように破片しかありませんが、本サイトには昔の絵巻などを参考にした、鯨舟の再現の絵を掲載しました。鮮明な色で鳳凰さくら海老又は太地家の家紋などあります。

舟の全てを見る

本サイトでは鯨舟が芸術品として掲載されても、もちろん捕鯨の最も重要な備品でありました。下記には再現の絵で描かれた鯨舟と捕鯨の屏風に描かれた鯨舟を比較できるように掲載しました。

Taiji's whale boats were "painted in such brilliant colors as can be seen in the wonders of nature and fantasy" according to a visitor at the beginning of the 19th century.

All that remains today are a few fragments, pictured above, but this site features recreations of the boats, which we know from paintings and scrolls featured vivid phoenix birds, chrysanthemums, cherry blossoms and spiny lobsters, along with the hash-like Taiji family crest.
