Whale Boats: Styles and Designs
Most of the cannery workers on Terminal Island were Japanese women. They were first-generation immigrants that came from the fishing villages in the southern region of the Kii Peninsula, or second-generation Japanese that were born on the island. Immediately after Japanese forces attacked Pearl Harbor early on the morning of Dec. 7, 1941, FBI agents came to Terminal Island. First-generation Japanese men were rounded up and sent to "alien enemy detention centers." On Feb. 24, 1942, the U.S. Navy ordered that all remaining Japanese had to leave the island within 48 hours. This photograph was taken after the attack on Pearl Harbor but before the order to leave was issued, when the shadow of war hung over the island.
